The False Hope of the Environmentally-friendly Automobile

Instead of proclaiming smaller (or hybrid) cars to be the panacea for environmental transportation, why not focus on better city planning, promoting railroads, reducing highway travel, stopping urban sprawl and focusing on walkable cities...

Focus on better city planning, promoting railroads, reducing highway travel, stopping urban sprawl and focusing on walkable cities...? But that might adversely affect the all-mighty "Profit Margin" of the Divine Corporate Entities that currently reign supreme. It could even lead to a decreased desire to exploit the environment and usurp foreign nations for their fossil fuels. Much better to offer the public a selection of over-priced wheeled placebos that will make them feel all warm and fuzzy about doing their part.
